Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim were both on the crease and the
Tigers needed two runs from three balls to seal a fairytale win.
Yet, like a tragic hero whose own mistakes bring his downfall, both of them blew the chance away, by trying to go big and ending up giving catches in consecutive balls.
Hardik Pandya beat Shuvagata Hom in the last ball and he ran to the opposite end, but India wicket-keeper MS Dhoni was faster than Mustafizur Rahman who fell victim to a run out as the hosts fans went crazy in Bangalore.

In a few minutes, a team that was about to win by four wickets lost the game by a run. Chasing 147, the Tigers were well on course for a victory thanks to their batting depth, although they lost wickets on regular interval. Poor fielding by the Indians did help them, but they failed to take their chances in the end.
Tamim Iqbal top-scored with a 32-ball 35 while Sabbir Rahman added 26 and Shakib Al Hasan 22 to keep the team's dreams alive in the beginning. Somuya Sarkar then made a run-a-ball 21 as Bangladesh went into the penultimate over with 17 runs needed from 12 balls.
In the last over, the Tigers needed 11 and Mushfiq hit two fours in the second and third balls to send Bangladesh fans wild. But they had to shed tears in the end as the trusted hands broke their hearts.
The trio of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya bagged two wickets each for India with the former being adjudged the man-of-the-match.
Earlier, Bangladesh bowlers were equal to the India batsmen as the Tigers did not let the hosts make more than 146.
None of the India batsmen could make more than 30, which does say how the Bangladesh bowlers contained the Indian batsmen, but India rode on a number of personal contributions.
Winning the toss, Tigers skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza invited the Indians to bat first with a view to chase down the target in a batting Bangalore pitch.
Openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan were doing a nice job before Mustafizur Rahman struck as the former gave a catch to Sabbir Rahman after making 18.
Dhawan was next to go as Shakib Al Hasan pinned him before the wicket after he hit 23 off 22 while Kohli hit 24 in as many balls, which came to an end when Shuvagata bowled him with a beautiful delivery.
Suresh Raina was the highest scorer with a 30 off 23 deliveries while Hardik Pandya added 15 in 7 balls and MS Dhoni 13 besides R Jadeja's 12 as the ended on 146 for 7.
Besides the Tigers' bowling, the highlight was another beautiful catch by Soumya Sarkar who ended a dangerous-looking Pandya's innings.
Al-Amin Hossain and Mustafizur Rahman bagged two wickets each while Mahmudullah, Shakib and Shuvagata claimed one apiece.
The win means India are second in the table with four points, but any of them, Pakistan and Australia can qualify for the semifinals.
Both India and Pakistan have a game to play, against the same opponent, Australia. New Zealand have already qualified from this group courtesy of three wins in three.
